What is Character Counter?
Our character counter is a free online tool for counting up the exact number of characters/letters within a string of text. It provides three counts; the total number of characters, the number of characters without spaces, and the frequency of each unique letter. It's the perfect tool when you need an exact character count for an essay, email, social media post, and more.
How do I use the character counter?
Begin by typing or pasting your text into the input field above on this page. Below the input field, you will find three statistics displaying your character counts, which our tool automatically calculates.
How are characters counted?
Characters are counted by totalling the number of letters, punctuation marks, special characters, and spaces within the string of text. E.g., "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" has 43 characters altogether.
A count for the number of characters without spaces is also generated. E.g., "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" is 35 characters without spaces in total.
How is letter frequency calculated?
Letter frequency is computed by extracting each unique character from your text, and then calculating the number of occurrences of that character. This creates a map of unique characters to count which is displayed in the results.
For example, "Hello, world!" has the following letter distributions: "H": 1, "E": 1, "L": 3, "O": 2, "W": 1, "R": 1, "D": 1, "comma": 1, "space": 1, and "exclamation mark": 1.
